Our review
Claude Code is Anthropic's official terminal coding agent, great at understanding and refactoring very large codebases, with a Hook system for deep automation. Since Aug 14, 2026, new sessions on Pro, Max and Team default to auto mode (pausing only for irreversible or out-of-environment actions); Fable 5.1 defaults to High effort in Claude Code.
The command line has a learning curve, it consumes quota, and it requires a Claude subscription; but for large refactors, codebase comprehension and terminal workflows, it's a daily driver for many developers.
